    Published 28/02/21

    Dear Parents

We are looking forward to welcoming all the children back to school on Monday 8th March.  We have revisited our risk assessment considering the current Government guidance.  Our previous protocols remain in place with the addition of some further safety procedures.

    • Staff will wear face masks when moving around the building and in common areas.
    • Staff now have access to lateral flow testing twice a week. (Infant age children are not expected to wear face masks and there will be no asymptomatic testing of the children)
    • Where possible, parents/carers should wear face masks when dropping off and collecting children.

The Government have said that schools can now provide wrap around childcare and run outside clubs.  Unfortunately, we are currently not able to offer all the above.  Our after-school club was closed due to lack of numbers and was not financially viable.  Our breakfast club has always been well attended and we do hope to offer this in the future.  Currently, we do not have the available staff to run the club. The age of our children means we could not maintain socially distanced groups in the breakfast club, and this could impact on the confidence of staff and parents in our procedures.

In the summer term, we will be offering outdoor after school clubs to children in key stage one.  These clubs will be run in class bubbles.  This means clubs will not run for as many weeks as usual to ensure all the children are given equal opportunity.

Please find below a reminder of our general procedures and protocols for parents:

    Drop off and Collection:

The school will continue to operate a staggered start and end to the day. Groups will continue to be staggered by year group, not class.

    Between 8:30 and 8:40

    2:10

    Year One

    Between 8:40 and 8:50

    2:20

    Sibling drop off

If you have multiple children who attend Field Place you may drop them all off just before 8:40, there will be a sign up!

    Sibling collection

If you have year 3 children to collect from The Orchards you may collect all of your Field Place children at 2:20. If you have multiple children just at Field Place you may collect them all just before 2:30, again there will be a sign up!

    • Parents should not arrive earlier than their allotted time.
    • Unless your child has a significant need, only one parent should accompany children to school.
    • When you arrive, please queue along the path observing a 2-metre distance from other parents.
    • Your children should stay with you and not socialise with other families as you wait.
    • During your ten minutes drop off time, the class teacher will be waiting on the playground to welcome the children. The teacher will begin taking children to the classroom once the first half of the class have arrived, in order to begin hand washing. Support staff will greet and take down all other children arriving during this time slot.
    • Children will leave you at the gate and go into school and line up with their teacher
    • If you arrive after your allotted time, your child will need to walk by themselves to their classroom.
    • There will be a one-way system in place, which means you will leave the school through the carpark. (This will be safe, as no cars will arrive or leave during these times.
    • To keep the flow of people moving and maintain social distancing, we cannot store bikes or scooters at this time.  If your child arrives by bike or scooter, you will need to take this home with you.
    • We anticipate that queues may extend onto the pavement outside the school. NO DOGS should be secured near where parents or children are queuing. Please leave dogs at home.
    • Parents should maintain social distancing and not gather in groups before or after school.
    • At pick up time, class teachers will bring the children onto the small playground to wait for their adult.  Parents should queue using the same protocol as the morning.  The adult on the gate will ask who you have come to collect, and your child will then be sent to you. We will ensure that siblings can be collected at the same time.
    • Families will then leave the site using the one-way system
    • Teachers will be unable to talk to parents at the beginning or end of the day.  Any concerns or problems will be addressed via phone.

What will my child need to bring to school?

    • A water bottle
    • A sunhat
    • A coat (depending on weather)
    • A packed lunch if they are not having school dinners
    • A school book bag

The children will not need to bring in a PE kit, but should come to school dressed for PE on PE days. For hygiene reasons, children cannot bring in any toys or other items from home. Things made in school will be brought home on Fridays, allowing time for these items to stay in children’s drawers for 24 hours or more.

We are aware that children in the nursery and reception may need a transition toy.  This is a developmental stage where transition objects can be supportive, and we understand that leaving parents at the gate can be tricky for such young children. If a nursery or reception child needs a transition toy, it will be stored in the teacher’s cupboard and only used by the one child when needed.

Children will be bringing home books from school, as learning to read is a priority skill for infants.  Once returned, reading books will be stored out of circulation for 48 hours before being used by other children.

    Hygiene and Cleanliness Procedures

The children will be washing their hands regularly throughout the day – on arrival, before and after play, before and after lunch, before PE and after PE and at the end of the day.  They will also wash their hands if they cough, sneeze or are seen to specifically lick their hands or put their fingers in their mouth. Children will be told to use a tissue or their elbow if they need to cough or sneeze and then bin the tissue and wash their hands.

As class sizes are returning to 30, it is not possible for each child to sit at a separate table.  However, all children in key stage one will have their own drawer and a pencil case with their own frequently used resources – (pencil, handwriting pen, crayons, scissors and glue stick). Children will have their own ruler, which will be kept in their drawer.

In Nursery and Reception, play equipment will not be shared between groups and will be cleaned regularly.

Where possible, each class will have exclusive use of a toilet block.  This means that girls and boys will be sharing a toilet block.  Where this is not possible, no more than two classes will use a toilet area.  These toilets will have additional cleaning throughout the day.  Staff will monitor the use of shared toilets to avoid children from different classes coming into contact.

Door handles, toilets and tables in classrooms will be disinfected regularly during the day. Each classroom will be cleaned with disinfectant/bleach at the end of the day.  Classrooms will be well- ventilated, and windows left open whenever possible.

    Distancing Procedures

Classes will use their outside doors to enter and exit the building.  Apart from going to the Hall for hot lunches, classes will not need to use the corridors.  There will be no whole school assemblies and PE will be timetabled for outside whenever possible.

The school office will not be open for parents to drop in.  If you have a query or need to purchase school items, please call the office on 01903 700234.

    Play and Lunchtime

The large playground will be separated into play zones. We are lucky that we also have the small playground and the reception play area.  This means that we can successfully timetable separate play areas for each group of children.  Teachers will explain to children where they can play and that they cannot play with children in a different zone.

With more children in school, we will now need to use the Hall to serve some lunches. No more than two classes will eat in the hall at any one time and tables will be disinfected before the next sitting.  Some hot lunches will be served to children in their classrooms.  After lunch, the children will go to their play zone.

What happens if someone becomes unwell?

It is very important that if your child or anyone in your family has any of the three confirmed symptoms of Covid-19, you should not bring your child to school. These symptoms are:

    • a new continuous cough
    • a high temperature
    • a loss of, or change in, you normal sense of taste or smell (anosmia)

If your child or a member of your family does have any of these symptoms, you need to be willing to:

    • Book a coronavirus test
    • Contact the school immediately once the test result is known
    • Provide details of anyone you have been in close contact with if you were to test positive
    • Self-isolate if you have been in close contact with someone who develops Covid-19 symptoms or someone who tests positive for Covid-19

If a negative result is confirmed, your child can return to school as soon as they feel well.

If you or your child do not have a test, they will be unable to return to school for 10 days after the first sign of symptoms.

If a positive result is confirmed, the sick person should self-isolate for 10 days.  After 10 days, if the person who showed symptoms does not have a high temperature, they do not need to continue to self-isolate.  If they still have a high temperature, they should continue to self-isolate until the temperature returns to normal.  They do not need to self-isolate if they only have a cough or anosmia after 10 days, as these symptoms can last for several weeks after the infection has gone.  Other household members must not leave the house for 10 days.  if anyone else in the household starts displaying symptoms, they should also book a test.

If school is informed of a positive test, we will contact our local public health department and follow their guidance and advice.  Procedures in school mean that we will be able to trace the groups of children who have been in close contact with the child.

If a child shows symptoms of Covid-19 while at school, they will be isolated from other children.  A trained first aider will support the child and remain with them until an adult arrives to collect them.  If the first aider is unable to maintain a two-meter distance, they will wear PPE while they wait with the child.  This will comprise of a facemask, gloves, and an apron.  Children who are unwell will be cared for in the side entrance to the school.  This will allow parents to pick children up with ease.

If a member of staff becomes unwell, they will book a test straight away.  The school is able to employ supply teachers to cover absence. Classes will not need to close unless positive testing leads to local public health officials advising the school to do so.

    Changes to Curriculum

The school is dedicated to providing children with a broad, balanced and creative curriculum.  However, our core purpose within the infant phase is to ensure that children enter the junior school able to read, write and work with numbers to 100.  Reading is the gateway to all other areas of the curriculum and children who do not gain these skills can struggle to access the other areas of the curriculum moving forward.  We know that parent have been doing a fantastic job to support their children at home, but loss of learning over time is potentially going to be a significant challenge for this cohort of children.  We will therefore be focussing our initial teaching up to Easter on these core skills.

We know that the emotional wellbeing of the children is also paramount and our Personal, Social, Heath and Relationships curriculum will be enhanced to support the children.  There will be many opportunities for children to play together and work outside the classroom with a focus on science and art pursuits. Our curriculum cornerstones, the power of talk, growth mindset, broadening horizons and love of the natural world, will continue to underpin our offer where possible.

We will reintroduce further areas of the curriculum after Easter.  Subject leaders will identify the key skills the children need as a foundation to the next stage in their education.

In the event of a child/group of children needing to self-isolate, home learning will be available for all children.

    Attendance

Attendance at school is mandatory from March 8th and our usual protocols will be in place.  Please contact the school as soon as you know your child will not be attending.  All unreported absence will be followed up daily by the admin team.  Unauthorised absences of 10 sessions (5 days) will be referred to the school entitlement team.  If you are having any difficulties getting your child to school, please talk to us as soon as possible so we can support you.

We look forward to seeing you all on the 8th March and will continue to use parentmail for any further updates.  If you have any whole school questions regarding the return to school, please contact us via office@fieldplace.org.uk If you have any individual concerns about the return to school, please contact us via secretary@fieldplace.org.uk

    Dear Parents

Thank you all for your patience and understanding around a very dynamic and complex week of school. I will do my best to update you today on how things are going for children in school and for home learners. There have inevitably been some teething problems and we have been doing our best to identify and rectify these.

Firstly, information for children who are currently attending school:

Key Risk Assessment information for children in school

    • Each Bubble of children is kept separate from other bubbles throughout the day, including at playtime and lunchtime.
    • Each Bubble has a separate toilet block.
    • Children are washing their hands regularly throughout the day.
    • Tables are being wiped within the day and classrooms thoroughly cleaned at the end of the day.
    • Classroom and playground equipment is not being shared between bubbles
    • Adults are wearing facemasks in corridors and adult shared spaces
    • Parents are being asked to wear facemasks when bringing their children to school
    • You must not send your child to school if they, or anyone in the household, has symptoms of COVID, or are waiting for a COVID test result.

    PE

We are hoping that all our bubbles will have an opportunity to get exercise each day, either through PE or through the golden mile.  Can the children please wear their usual school uniform each day, but ensure they have suitable footwear for exercise.  We are happy for children to wear trainers everyday if they have them.

    Bubbles

The current Government guidance around bubbles states: ‘Whilst schools are attended by vulnerable children and the children of critical workers only, where possible schools should keep group sizes small.’ The school must ensure that there are enough teachers available to provide good quality home learning.  This means that we may need to increase bubble sizes to above 15 if we have too many key worker or vulnerable children attending school.

If you are a key worker who does not work every day of the week, the West Sussex guidance is that your child can attend every day.  The Government guidance states: ‘Parents and carers who are critical workers should keep their children at home if they can.’  If you decide to keep your child at home when you are not working, they should access remote learning for those days.

    Information for children at home:

    Free School Meals

If your child is entitled to benefit related free school meals, you will be able to collect a food package from the school next week.  We will email to let you know when these are ready for collection.  The Government are not currently providing vouchers. If you are self-isolating due to COVID, please let us know and we will do our best to deliver your food package.

    Remote Learning

We know that finding supporting technology for some families is a challenge.  Please note that you can use an Xbox or Play Station console to access Oak Academy, White Rose, and the phonic lessons.  We are currently gathering information to further support families who may be experiencing technical difficulties.

If you wish to supplement the school’s online learning, the BBC will be launching some additional resources next week.  We will be looking at what is available so we can provide helpful information around this for the following week.

All home learning will be available to access via the school website from 9am tomorrow morning and will be updated daily.

PLEASE NOTE THAT NURSERY REMAINS OPEN FOR ALL CHILDREN

    Dear Parents

I hope you have had a lovely half term. We are looking forward to welcoming the children back tomorrow.

As we head into the Christmas half term, things will inevitably feel very different this year.  We are not going to be able to do many of the traditional events that we enjoy so much, such as Christmas plays, winter concerts and the Christmas pantomime.  We will however make sure the children continue to celebrate the lead up to Christmas.  We will be having our Christmas tree and although we do not use the Hall for whole school events, the children can come as a class to enjoy Christmas stories around the tree. The children will be making decorations, learning more about the Christmas story and understanding the importance of giving. Our final Christingle assembly will take place in classrooms. We are hoping to share some of our Christmas preparations via the website so you are also able to feel part of what we are doing.

    Christmas Card Orders

I hope you have managed to order products through the Cauliflower website if you wished to.  Please remember that the paperwork MUST be returned to school tomorrow if you want your order to go through.  The school has to send the original artwork off and this is being collected first thing on Wednesday morning.  Please bring the paperwork to the office after dropping the children off rather than leaving it in bookbags where it can get forgotten.

    Coronavirus Update

West Sussex County Council have asked Headteachers to send out the attached letter.  This is to explain the current situation for schools around our duty to close bubbles when there is a confirmed case of coronavirus. Some schools have found that parents can be quite unpleasant to admin staff and senior leaders when this happens.  I would like to thank all of our parents who were very understanding when the closure of one of our bubbles was necessary. Although I cannot guarantee this will never happen again, I am pleased to confirm that no further cases were identified following our positive case. This helps us to feel confident that our protocols are working to reduce risk. I would also like to thank Badger parents for their support and praise for the online learning the school provided.  This feedback is very useful.

    Harvest and Turning Tides

Thank you to everyone who brought in £1.00 for MUFTI at the end of the half term.  We have raised £162.00 for turning tides.  We know this will help them to buy the food they need to support people.

    School Development Plan

Each year the school focuses on some key improvements/developments.  Our Curriculum Design is based around our four Cornerstones: The Power of Talk, Growth Mindset, Broadening Horizons and Love of the Natural World. This year we will be focusing on the following areas that will further strengthen our Curriculum Design and Cornerstones:

Metacognition – This develops the children’s language for learning and helps them to understand how they learn and how to improve.  (The Power of Talk, Growth Mindset)

Maths Mastery – This will be our second year of working with the Maths Hub to ensure the children embrace challenge and can apply their learning to problem solving. (Growth Mindset, Broadening Horizons)

Challenging Environments in Early Years – Reception are further developing the environment as children’s skills grow.  This enables them to take their new skills effectively into their play and self-initiated learning

We will update parents throughout the year to let you know how these developments are going.

Please find attached the next Key Stage One Newsletter.

    Parent Consultations

Thank you to everyone who has already booked a parent consultation.  Bookings are through parentmail this year, which should be quick and easy to do.  As explained in the previous parentmail, to keep everyone safe, we will not be holding face-to-face consultations and all meetings will be over the phone.

Teachers will use the contact information held on our system to call parents. This will be the phone number registered under the primary carer.  If you know this information is out of date, please let the office know on Monday.

We have allowed ten minutes for each call and we will need to stick to these timings in order to ensure parents are not kept waiting. The call will probably come through as ‘number unknown’ so please be prepared to take the call.  If the phone is not answered, teachers will try two further times during the first 5 minutes.  After that, it will not be possible for the parent consultation to take place.  Please do not call the school, as no one will be taking general calls during the parent consultation period.

    Alien Day

Year Two will be having their Alien Day on Wednesday.  We are looking forward to everyone dressing up and to welcoming back Badger Class. There will be no PE for year two on Alien day, so the children do not need to bring in any additional clothing.

    MUFTI DAY

At this time of year, we would usually be supporting 'Turning Tides' through a Harvest Festival.  In the past, this had meant bringing in food items.  However, this will not be possible at the moment.  I have spoken to 'Turning Tides' and they would welcome financial contributions so they are able to purchase the most needed items to support the local homeless community.  We have decided to make Friday a MUFTI day and would kindly ask that children bring in £1.00 to support the charity.  If your child has PE on this day, could they please wear trainers and home clothes that would be suitable and safe to do PE in.

    Christmas card Designs

The children will be bringing home their Christmas card designs on Thursday.  You can then decide whether you would like to place an online order for any products. If you make an order, the designs will then need to be returned to school on Monday 2nd November so we can send them to the company to be processed.

Badger class will be designing their cards on Thursday and we will then send them home on Friday.  They will not have as much time as the other children to do this, but we do not want them to miss the opportunity.

    Half Term

Next week is our last week before half term.  Friday is our last day and unless major Government changes take place, the children are due back in school on Monday 2nd November

    A couple of reminders/requests

Dogs are not allowed on the School site.  Last week a couple of parents/carers brought their dogs down the path to the main gate.  There is a clear sign at the entrance stating that dogs cannot be brought on the site.  Unless you have an additional adult to look after your dog while children are being collected, please leave dogs at home.

Can we please ask that water bottles are not put inside bookbags.  We are finding that each week, five to six school books are being ruined due to leaks.  Our home reading books cost £5.00 each and we need to do our best to look after them.

    Information and Events

    New Parents for September 2021

West Sussex schools are being advised not to have face to face tours of the school for potential new entrants, so we have uploaded a virtual tour.  If you know anyone who is interested in coming to Field Place, please let them know that the tour is now on the website. Thank you.

    Alien Day

Just another reminder that we have changed the date of the Year Two Alien Day to Wednesday 21st October, rather than this Friday.  This will mean that the whole of year two will be able to join in.

    Christmas Cards

We are working with a company this year so the children can design their own Christmas image for Christmas cards, wrapping paper, mugs etc.  The children will develop their designs in school and then this original artwork will be sent home with details on how you can order products online should you wish to.  The artwork will then need to be returned to school so we can forward it to the company.  The school will also make commission on any sales. We will be sending out more details soon with timings and deadlines.

    INSET DAYS

Following our two INSET days in September, we have three further INSET days planned for this year:

    Monday 4th January 2020

    Thursday 1st April 2021

    Friday 23rd July 2021

    Dear Parents

I would like to thank one of our parents, Mr Anderson and Empire Services for their very generous donation towards our new outside staging area.  The children now have an area to perform poems, sing and enjoy drama and role-play in the fresh air. This further supports our curriculum cornerstone – the power of talk.

    Curriculum Update

Please find attached this half term’s curriculum newsletters.  We have been focussing on phonics, reading, maths, art and PSHE to ensure the children’s return to school has been positive and not overwhelming following the long period of lockdown.

Year one and two children are now bringing home core word sets for you to practise.  Phonics lessons help the children to build words based on their knowledge of the sounds.  Many words cannot be built up with sounds and just have to be learnt by sight.  These are the words we call core words.  If you can practise these regularly with the children using a flashcard – ‘see it, say it’- approach, this will really support their reading fluency.

    Parent’s Evening

We will soon be organising our first parent’s evening of the year.  As the cases of coronavirus rise across the country, we will need to ensure our whole school community remains safe.  This means that parent’s evening meetings will be over the phone this term.  We will arrange these meetings over two weeks, the week before half term and the week after.

    Year Two Alien Day

You should have received a letter last week about our Alien topic day on Friday 16th October. We are looking forward to having an alien themed day and Year Two children are able to come into school wearing an alien costume. Please remember that you don't need to buy a costume unless you wish, as clothes from home are great too. Please don't bring accessories, costume items only.

    Drop off and Pick up

I hope that our use of signs at the beginning and end of the day is helping to keep things organised and safe.  I would like to clarify how our sibling arrangements work, as some parents seem unsure.

The Orchards do not have a staggered start to the day and they accept children from all year groups any time between 8:30 and 8:45.  If you have a child at the Orchards, this means you can choose the best time for them to arrive to shorten your wait with us. For example, if you have a child in reception with us, you can drop the older child off at 8:45 and you will then have no longer than 10 minutes to wait.  We consider this reasonable.

We do however acknowledge that if you have more than one child at Field Place, there needs to be a process for dropping them off at the same time.  This is why we have our 8:40 Field Place sibling drop off time. In reality we normally allow this group of children to enter from 8:38 to ensure our year ones can come in promptly at 8:40.

At pick up time, like us, the Orchards have a staggered end to the day. We have always acknowledged that this could lead to significant periods of waiting.  We have mitigated this by offering a 2:20 or 2:30 sibling pick up to reduce the waiting time at the Orchards. These arrangements were made via a parent survey and we would ask that you please arrive at the time you requested.

I am sure you can appreciate the thought and effort that has gone into managing the orderly start and end to the day.  Although some parents may feel we should offer further options, this is not possible and the current arrangements will remain in place unless we receive new guidance or the Orchards change their arrangements.

If you arrive before the time your child can enter or be collected, can you please join the queue of parents along the pavement rather than stand at the gate.  Some parents are feeling anxious about the lack of social distancing. Joining the queue avoids groups congregating and stops any bad feelings when parents join the middle of the queue once it is moving.  We will make sure no one misses their slot by walking down the queue to let you know when the next group of children can enter.  If you really do not wish to queue, there is a 10 minute window for each group and you could choose to arrive at the end of the window to avoid waiting at all.

Once you have collected your child at the gate, can you please avoid checking bookbags or lunch boxes, by the main gates, as this does hold the queue up.  These can always be checked once you have reached the car park.

    Class emails

There have been some technical issues with class emails that we are working to sort out asap. If you have contacted the teacher in the last week, they have not yet been able to access this so apologise that they have not yet answered.  This should be sorted very soon.

    Home learning

We now have a home learning page on our website again. This is only for children who need to self isolate but are not unwell. You will need to phone the school office if your child has been advised to self isolate so we can ensure they have the right work set. We will then email you with their login details etc. Please see below attachment for more information.

    Online Reading Festival

Over the next week there is an online reading festival which has lots of different readings of stories by different authors along with some fun videos to go with them.  Parents/carers just need to sign up (which is free) and then the videos can be accessed live or after they have been released.

The link for infant children is below - hope you enjoy.

    Weather

Following our rainy exit on Thursday, I think autumn has arrived! Please remember the children need to bring a warm, waterproof coat to school every day.  Even if the sun is shining in the morning, it may not be by playtime.  Zip up fabric jackets are not suitable as school coats as they are not waterproof or warm enough for the cold weather.

    School Photos

Individual school photos will be taken on Monday 9th November.  The company have informed us that they are not able to take sibling photos this year as this could impact on COVID safe groupings.  They will offer families a 25% discount if buying two family photos or more.

    With Thanks

    Parent/Teacher contact

We are hoping to introduce a new system for teacher/parent communications, but this may take a few weeks to source and set up.  In the meantime, you are able to contact your child’s teacher via their class email.  This will be the name of your child’s class followed by @fieldplace.org.uk for example fox@fieldplace.org.uk

Teachers will check their emails regularly and you should hear back within 72 hours.  If you need to talk to a member of staff urgently or if you have information for the teacher that day i.e. a different person picking up, please continue to call the main office on 700234.

    Events this week

    The Golden Mile

Year one and two will be starting the Golden Mile this week.  The children really enjoy this exercise and like to challenge themselves.

    Wellbeing

Now the children have settled, we will be thinking about ‘belonging’ this week.  This will support the children’s wellbeing and help them to re-establish friendships and know what to do if they feel lonely or sad. Please talk to your child about all the places they belong; their family; their school; their faith; their neighbourhood and any clubs they are part of.

    Bank staff

Thank you to those parents who emailed Miss Worsfold (secretary@fieldplace.org.uk) to register their interest in joining our bank staff of LSAs. At this stage we will only be able to consider those of you who have a relevant NVQ3/equivalent qualification or above. Miss Worsfold will be in touch via email next week.
